This elegant Silky Wisteria is so called for its downy leaflets along the main leaf stem. The long, pinnate leaves make a lovely backdrop for the lilac-pink, fragrant flowers that appear in late spring and early summer. Unlike the better know Chinese Wisteria, the individual flowers of this species are much larger, forming short, somewhat stumpy racemes – but equally showy. Wisteria brachybotrys ‘Showa-beni’ is a recent introduction with a distinctive yellow spot to the centre of each bloom. After flowering it forms bean-like seed pods which dangle from the branches. An excellent, vigorous climber for a large wall, or trained over a pergola. Height: to 12m (40′). Spread: 8m (26′). Supplied as a grafted plant.Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
