This Syringa, better known as Lilac, will form a beautiful stand-alone small tree of circa three metres tall if allowed, or a larger shrub for the back of a garden border. Adding both colour and fragrance to the garden in late spring, flowers are complimented by attractive almost heart shaped mid-green leaves.
The larger spikes of purple flowers will cover the plant and look stunning in the spring sunshine, these produce a fantastic perfume – the fragrance is loved by both people and garden friendly bees and butterflies. In autumn, enjoy hues of butter yellow as the deciduous foliage fades prior to falling for winter, where the branches will then form a structural silhouette for the winter months.
Lilacs such as Mrs Edward Harding are tolerant of a wide range of soil types, so are suitable for virtually all garden, they will however prefer a sunny aspect, for the best displays of blossom, provide granular feed each spring, and mulch well to retain moisture for the summer months. If you do need to prune, complete this straight after flowering, that way, new summer growth will carry flowers again the following spring.
Overall, this is a great plant to have, particularly if situated nearer the house so you can enjoy the perfume on those sunny spring days. It is ideal for a mixed shrub border or cottage garden style planting scheme, or even trained as a solitary small tree in a lawned area.
