Sambucus nigra, the Common Elder, is a familiar sight in the British countryside and a fantastic choice for bringing some of that relaxed, natural character into the garden. Its leafy branches burst into bloom in early summer, carrying broad, frothy heads of tiny creamy-white flowers with their distinctive elderflower fragrance. These are followed later in the year by hanging clusters of small, glossy black berries.
Fast growing and naturally bushy, Elder makes a useful large shrub or small tree for informal hedges, screens, wildlife areas and larger mixed plantings. Its fresh green, divided foliage provides a handsome backdrop for the summer flowers, before taking on paler yellow tones in autumn.
It’s especially rewarding in a wildlife garden, where the flowers provide food for pollinating insects and the berries attract birds and small mammals.
Supplied in approx 2-3 litre containers.
