A majestic evergreen oak, Quercus ilex, also known as the Holm Oak, is prized for its dense, dark green foliage and strong presence. Its leathery, holly-like leaves remain year-round, creating a bold backdrop in any garden. In spring, it produces small, yellow-green catkins that attract pollinators, while its grey bark and rounded canopy add architectural interest throughout the seasons. Over time, it develops into a large, spreading tree, ideal for creating shade or acting as a handsome windbreak.
Plant in a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained, fertile soil. Quercus ilex is very low-maintenance, needing only occasional pruning to remove dead or congested branches and shape when necessary.
