Potentilla atrosanguinea is a free-flowering perennial admired for its rich, velvety red blooms. The open flowers bring a warm, glowing intensity to borders, while the plant’s airy stems and relaxed habit give it a natural, cottage-garden charm. Its long flowering season makes it a valuable choice for adding sustained colour and energy to informal planting schemes without feeling heavy or overpowering.
This potentilla thrives in a sunny position and prefers well-drained soil. It pairs particularly well with plants that soften and balance its strong colouring, such as Alchemilla mollis for a fresh green texture. Perennials such as Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ enhance its natural, meadow-like quality, creating a lively yet harmonious border. To maintain the plant, remove spent flowers during the season to encourage repeat blooming, and cut back the foliage to ground level in late autumn or early spring to promote fresh, healthy growth.
