Milium effusum ‘Aureum’ is an ornamental grass grown primarily for its luminous chartreuse-gold foliage, which brings a bright, uplifting glow to shaded areas of the garden. The elegant arching leaves create a graceful fountain-like effect, adding movement, texture and year-round interest to woodland-style planting schemes. In summer, delicate airy flowers rise above the foliage, enhancing its natural charm. Its unique colouring makes it invaluable for illuminating darker corners and creating a fresh, contemporary feel in borders and containers.
Perfect for woodland gardens, shaded borders, courtyard gardens and decorative patio containers, ‘Aureum’ thrives in partial to full shade where its foliage colour remains at its brightest. Plant in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil and water regularly during prolonged dry spells, particularly when grown in containers. Maintenance is minimal, requiring only the removal of old or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring before fresh growth emerges. Use in drifts beneath trees or in mixed-shade borders with heuchera and brunnera for a layered, naturalistic planting style.
