If you have a bare, shady wall crying out for something special, Hydrangea anomala subsp. Petiolaris is a fabulous choice. This impressive climbing hydrangea gradually clothes its surroundings in a rich tapestry of leafy green growth, then bursts into flower in early summer.
Its large, flattened flower heads can reach around 20cm across, combining masses of tiny creamy white flowers with larger, showy white florets around the edges. The effect is wonderfully light and lacy against the deep green leaves. Come autumn, the foliage takes on attractive yellow tones before falling.
