Epimedium × rubrum, affectionately known as Bishop’s Hat, is one of those quietly brilliant plants that can transform a shady patch into something rather special. In spring, slender stems rise above the foliage carrying delicate crimson flowers with contrasting creamy-yellow spurs. Their intricate shape gives them an almost fairy-like appearance when seen up close.
The foliage puts on a show of its own. Fresh leaves emerge attractively tinged with red before developing into green, with further reddish colouring returning in autumn. Growing to around 30cm tall with a spreading, ground-covering habit, it slips beautifully beneath shrubs and roses, along woodland-style borders or across shady banks.
It is a lovely way to add colour, texture and detail at ground level, particularly in parts of the garden where more sun-loving perennials would struggle.
