Rare and highly unusual, the aptly named Echinacea paradoxa is a yellow Purple Coneflower, bringing a fabulous twist to traditions. During summer, its upright stems bear elegant golden-yellow flowers with gracefully drooping petals. Versatile and loved by pollinators, it is an excellent choice for prairie-style planting, wildlife gardens and colourful perennial borders. Blooms are surprisingly fragrant.
This perennial is happy in sun and well-drained soil where it can become quite tolerant of drier soil conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season and deadhead faded flowers to encourage a longer display, or leave seed heads for attractive winter interest. Cut back old stems in late winter or early spring.
