Unfurling in the still-chilly days of late winter, Crocus ‘Vanguard’ is a beautiful variety with silky, lilac outer petals and violet inner tones, all cupped around brilliant orange stamens. These bi-colour blooms open wide in sunlight, creating a radiant display, bringing early warmth to borders, rockeries, or containers. Among the first to flower, they offer a vital early nectar source for pollinators and a hopeful sign that spring is on the way.
Plant bulbs 8–10cm deep and 5–8cm apart in gritty, well-drained soil in full sun. To enhance their cool-toned beauty, pair with Chionodoxa luciliae, Iris reticulata ‘Harmony’, or Scilla mischtschenkoana. For a bold contrast, try combining with golden Narcissus ‘Tête-à-Tête’.
