One of the easiest early-summer perennials for bold, electric-blue colour, Centaurea montana produces striking, thistle-like blooms that instantly draw the eye. Each fringed flower opens in violet-blue hues. Flowering from late spring into early summer, it delivers a welcome splash of cool colour just as borders begin to build momentum.
Exceptionally hardy and easy to grow, Centaurea montana thrives in full sun or light shade and well-drained soil, coping well with a range of garden conditions. Maintenance requirements are low, needing only deadheading to prolong flowering and a light trim after blooming to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy shape. It pairs beautifully with Alchemilla mollis for soft texture, or early-flowering Salvia to create a pollinator-friendly display. Reliable, vibrant, and wonderfully undemanding, this is a superb perennial for adding effortless colour to borders and cottage-style plantings.
