Better known as Cupid’s Dart, this plant produces attractive, long-lasting cornflower-like blooms in summer. Its papery lavender-blue flowers sway gracefully above the grey-green foliage, adding a light, naturalistic feel to borders and cottage-style planting.
We like to use ‘Catananche caerulea’ en masse in prairie-style plantings, mixed with grasses, echinacea and the occasional hemerocallis. Easy to grow and low maintenance, plant in full sun and well-drained soil, avoiding heavy, wet conditions. It tolerates dry conditions well and benefits from occasional deadheading to prolong flowering.
