Catalpa Bignonioides Aurea – Golden Indian Bean Tree

A spreading tree with large, white, trumpet-shaped flowers at maturity. Catalpa bignonioides ‘Aurea’, also known as the Golden Indian Bean Tree, is dressed in large, heart-shaped leaves in golden-yellow, which emerge with a warm glow in spring, before softening slightly as the season progresses. As a bonus, it also wards off gnats and flies.
Ideal for feature plantings in modern, formal and cottage gardens, it pairs beautifully with underplanting such as hosta to complement its lush canopy. To maximise this tree, plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil and provide shelter from strong winds when young. Low-maintenance once established, it benefits from occasional pruning to maintain shape and remove lower growth for a clear stem. Can be kept as a superb large shrub by pruning too.
