Buddleja Alternifolia Unique – Buddleia Butterfly Bush – Large

Introduced from China in 1915, Buddleja alternifolia is a spectacular large deciduous shrub with an elegant, arching habit that creates a graceful cascading display. In late spring to early summer, its fountain-like branches become smothered in clusters of fragrant lilac-pink flowers borne across the entire length of the previous year’s stems, creating a breathtaking feature. Highly attractive to pollinators, this variety can reach 3-4m in height and spread, making it ideal as a specimen shrub, informal hedge or focal point in larger gardens.
Plant ‘Unique’ in full sun and well-drained soil, where it will flower most abundantly. Water regularly during its first season until established, then only during prolonged, dry spells. Unlike many other buddlejas, this variety flowers on old wood, so prune only after flowering by removing spent shoots and lightly shaping the plant when required. Pair with Lavender, Echinacea and Verbena for a friendly cottage garden display or combine with roses for long-lasting seasonal interest.
