The ‘Snow Queen’ Birch is about the best you can get for ghostly white bark. A highly versatile tree, this birch will quickly develop an architectural shape, and the superb silvery-white bark, once established, is simply stunning. To ensure plenty of branching and a great shape, we prune out the main leader of these at around the 1.5m mark during the tree production process, so you get plenty of branches generated from below this lower down the trunk for a visual feast of colourful bark as the tree develops.
These can be grown as a single-trunked or multi-stemmed tree if pruned. They are often planted in groups, and with brightly coloured plants such as the red ‘Sibirica’ or orange ‘Midwinter Fire’ for winter displays. They also combine wonderfully with Hamamelis Witch Hazels. For an understory that will add fragrance, it is the way to go.
