Astrantia major ‘Claret’ is a real border gem, producing masses of intricate, deep purplish-red flowers that seem to hover on slender stems above the foliage. Look closely and each bloom is a miniature work of art, with a pincushion-like centre surrounded by pointed, papery bracts in sumptuous claret tones.
Growing into a neat, bushy clump around 60cm tall, ‘Claret’ brings colour without looking heavy or overpowering. Its airy flower stems weave beautifully between other perennials and grasses, making it particularly at home in cottage gardens and relaxed mixed borders. It also works wonderfully beneath roses and shrubs, where its rich colouring provides an eye-catching contrast against softer pinks, whites and fresh greens.
