Artichoke ‘Green Globe’ is a superb heritage variety loved for its large, globe-shaped edible flower buds and striking architectural appearance. Producing heavy crops of tender, flavourful green artichokes from mid to late summer, this impressive perennial combines ornamental beauty with kitchen-garden productivity. Its bold silver-green foliage makes it a dramatic focal point in borders, vegetable plots and cottage gardens, while the unopened buds are considered a gourmet delicacy.
Growing up to 1.5m tall and wide, ‘Green Globe’ thrives in sunny positions and fertile, well-drained soil. If left unharvested, the buds open into magnificent purple thistle-like flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Water regularly during dry periods and mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil fertility. In colder regions, provide winter protection to help plants return year after year.
