Autumn is the key pruning season if you want to get the best from your garden next Spring and Summer so get pruning this Autumn. Trees and shrubs create structure in a garden, so it’s important to keep them in condition with regular pruning. This will improve their shape and prevent them from taking over the garden during the growing season. Even where space isn’t an issue, you’ll find flowering and fruiting potential is greatly increased too – if trees, shrubs and roses are not pruned regularly they become congested and less productive.
Be careful with mediterranean shrubs like lavender, cistus, rosemary and santolina as they will not withstand a winter prune, so if you’ve not done it yet, it is essential to bring these to size before the cold weather sets in.
Most herbaceous perennials should also be tackled in autumn. Cutting them down as they die back will restore order and tidiness to your borders, but be cautious with border-line hardy varieties such as penstemon. These are best left untouched until spring, so that their woody stems can protect the crowns from winter frosts.
